January run to the Selby

Today presented with perfect winter running weather. Cold, calm and sunny. The footing was great considering how much ice was under the snow. An easy 14k, we haven’t officially started our training yet. It was beautiful out in the early day sun.

Curiosity got the better of Sisters when we spied a spire peaking above a roadside hill. Up we went to see what was there and found a pioneer cemetery that was all but hidden from view. The Selby Pioneer Cemetery. We have driven and run by this cemetery countless times and had no idea it was there.

Well, finding it warranted a good inspection by the sisters! We dusted off stones and tried to read the engravings. Most stones were from the mid 1800. Young and old people, husbands and wives and kids, from Scotland, England and Wales. We imagined what it would have been like back then, moving to a new country, what port would they land at? How did they end up in our area? All those thoughts started a great discussion for the rest of the run.

We are always find inspiration when we run, just like this!

We are still running and still finding adventures everywhere! Stay tuned!

11/150 UKFAST Manchester 10k

Sunday morning Glenis ran the UKFAST UKFAST WE LOVE MANCHESTER 10K. That lucky girl is visiting the UK for a few weeks and decided she better run a little bit while she is there!

“The UKFast We Love Manchester 10k is known for its fast route and friendly atmosphere as well as its popularity in the region – commonly known as ‘the peoples race’. We welcome runners of all abilities, in this the perfect 10k event to beat your personal best, meet other runners and to raise money for charity, with over 3,000 entrants in 2016” according to their website.

It sounds like it was a lot of fun. She said it was a really hot day but I know Glenis, she loves the heat she would have been grinning ear to ear!

Glenis is having a great time visiting the UK, she has even taken a side trip to Spain.

I wish I was over there to run with my sister, and cheer her on. I know she missed me trotting by her side. She did send over a few pictures of her accomplishment!

10/150 The 16th Annual Rebecca Run for Spinal Muscular Atrophy

I was back at it today, volunteering at the Rebecca Run.

I started volunteering for the race back in 2001. Louise Smith and I were training for a marathon when she came up with the idea for a run to raise funds for SMA. Rebecca had just been diagnosed. It was during those long training runs that the idea to make it the best family friendly race developed.

Back then I was in charge of finding donations for the race kits. We wanted huge race kits at the Rebecca Run and we got them. We had so much stuff and not just samples sizes but full size bottle and packages of toiletries and pasta. We had to have shopping bags donated to put it all in. I even had 300 condoms donated!

It’s not like that now. No race bags to worry about but the people still come out to run and donated for the kids and their families. Corporate sponsors have come on board and their work and donations are truly appreciated.

Today was spectacular because Louise was able to stand up and announce that the new drug Spinraza, was approved by Health Canada, in July, for treatment of SMA in Canada. Yeah!

It’s a crazy expensive drug. According to the New York Times, Spinraza “will be among the most expensive drugs in the world”, with an estimated cost US$750,000 in the first year of treatment and “about US$375,000 annually after that.” Now to get insurance companies on board!

As Louise put it, this news doesn’t mean our job is done. We can’t stop until there is a cure!

So the Blister Sisters will be back at the Rebecca Run next year!

If you are looking for a fun race, chipped timed, with a family appeal consider the Rebecca Run next year. The kids can use your help.
Check out the Rebecca Run website for updates , photos of the event and a place to donate.

Summer Evening Ride

I love riding my bike. We don’t do enough riding. This evening was a perfect summer evening. That sent of summer was in the air, that gentle air that is so light. Perfect for a ride.

The grain harvest is happening, and the soya beans are growing.

Volunteering Sunday

We popped into town today to volunteer at the Easter Seals Run this morning. The Upper Canada Mall Easter Seals 10k is York Region’s longest running fundraiser for children and youth with physical disabilities. Over the past 40 years this race has raised nearly $3 million to help children and youth with physical disabilities.

Team Running Free Newmarket and the Blister Sisters were course marshals, making sure all the runners and walkers were on the right track. It was great to see such a good turn out on such a hot morning for a great cause!

Thursday Night Runners

I’m putting in a few hours at the store tonight. It’s cold out, really quite cold, minus 22 with the wind chill. There is a couple of groups going out on training runs.

Hearty crazy runners! Lol, but then we’ll be out tomorrow morning and it will be even colder! I love running!

Raid the Hammer 2015

The Blister Sister and the Bandage met up again to run Raid the Hammer put on by Don’t Get Lost. We had a great run on a beautiful November Sunday!

Blister Sisters and the Bandage

The race took place in the Dundas area, just outside of Hamilton. I actually recognized where we would be running from the maps handed out, we ran in the same area a few years ago. Luck for us this area was also our team member Jean’s (the bandage) old stomping ground so we had the advantage of knowing which way was up on the map!

We did really well, we weren’t last, we found all the controls and we defiantly had more than a few laughs. Isn’t that what running with friends is all about!

I’ve posted a few of our photos here and there are more great photos on the Don’t Get Lost Facebook page.

Today was the Peak to Peak hosted by Don’t Get Lost Adventure Running Club. We really like their races, they are fun, challenging and well organized and they give us great maps! We save them all, you never know when you’ll need an orienteering map of somewhere near Hamilton, LOL

This run was in the in the beautiful Dundas Valley near Hamilton Ontario. I love running in the fall!

You might guess from the name of the run that all the check point are on top of peaks in the Dundas Valley. It was a lot of fun, a butt burner getting up the hills and a butt burner getting back down!
