Raid the Rib 2018

A little mud, a few hills and a lot of fun! The Sisters joined in on the fun and participated in Don’t Get Losts Raid the Rib on Sunday. The event was held on the Niagara escarpment down near Niagara-on-the-Lake based out of Niagara College, a perfect venue for this event.

Course is mapped out and we are ready to go!

This was the first time we were able to participate as a team of two in a Raid. That meant we only had to look after one another throughout the run.

Maps in hand and compasses security tucked away in our packs off we went. This year there were 4 controls you could find in any order that were not worth points called the spine and a number of ribs off the spine that were full of points to find. We planned our route and stuck to it. Picking off the spine controls along with some of the ribs.

Screaming Tunnel, and mud!

It sounds easy but we were running up and down the escarpment, through mud (lots of mud), rocks, boulders and brush. Up and down cliffs and through more than a few streams that flow off the escarpment. It was a blast! We found every control we had planned to find and even the bonus controls.

Looking for the control

After scrapping off the mud we enjoyed the barbecue and salads and Glenis even won some of the draw prizes! A great day! Bring on the next event – Storm the Trent!

Listening to last minute instructions and the Winner is! (of the draw prize)

2017 Peak to Peak

After a summer of vacations and injury we finally got out for an adventure run at the Peak to Peak. It was Glenis’s first run after her little bike accident which landed her foot in a boot! She did great, I might have to stomp on her other foot to slow her down (just joking).

We were pretty proud of ourselves, hitting all our planned CP’s until we came to the last one and I realized I had lost my SportIdent (my timer). I know I had it at CP84 but bushwhacking through thick brambles must have ripped it from my finger and it was gone when we arrived at CP 85! We even retraced our steps, or tried to, all the way back to CP 84. Standing at the control, neither of us could remember the exact way we had chosen to bushwhacked our way towards the next CP. With all the leaves on the ground, it was like looking for that needle in a haystack!

A not so nice way to finish but we felt pretty darn good with our navigation and our first run event in months!

Raid the Rib 2016

Interesting weather for April last Sunday. It was cold, below freezing, damp and even a little snowy at times. Not quite want we expected for a mid-April romp through the woods. It was just perfect weather for Raid the Rib at Albion Hills Conservation Area. From what we could tell the organizers from Don’t Get Lost had a great turn out for the race.

Our team had a newbie this year, we were fortunate that Stephanie was able to join our team to make up the required team of three – The Blister Sisters and the Band-Aid (although she would have preferred to be called the butterfly strip!) We arrived in plenty of time to plan our route and to fill Stephanie in how an orienteering race works. She was a great addition to our team.

Studying the maps, we picked out the controls that we thought we could get to with in the 4 hour time limit. We did caution Stephanie that this was just an idea we had, we don’t ever really stick to our plan. When alternatives pop up, chances are we’ll take them, so be prepared for anything!

The first three or four controls were a piece of cake. Partly because of our great map reading skills and partly because the snow cover ground presented a trail right to the control. Track reading goes along with map reading, right?

Off we went down the road and onto the second map. Now, I’ve mountain biked at Albion, it’s a pretty popular place for riding and I have a general idea of there I am when I’m there. I really had no reference for the second map. We had to trust our map reading abilities, which at first proved to be sketchy and we got completely turned around after a couple of controls. No problem, here is where the alternative popped up. We just continued mapping our controls we hadn’t planned on getting but did find just like that. Everything just fell into place!

Other than that little turn around and missing one control we were sure we were going to find, we had a great race. Stephanie survived and we made it back to the finish with minutes to spare!

Today was the Peak to Peak hosted by Don’t Get Lost Adventure Running Club. We really like their races, they are fun, challenging and well organized and they give us great maps! We save them all, you never know when you’ll need an orienteering map of somewhere near Hamilton, LOL

This run was in the in the beautiful Dundas Valley near Hamilton Ontario. I love running in the fall!

You might guess from the name of the run that all the check point are on top of peaks in the Dundas Valley. It was a lot of fun, a butt burner getting up the hills and a butt burner getting back down!
