#100happydays Day 72 The Rockstar

#100happydays Day 72 The Rockstar

Another great day volunteering! You might have read before that the Rockstar is our favorite adventure race and it still is! Today we were stationed at CP31, the stand-up paddleboard station. As with all but a couple of mandatory check points, CP31 was optional. Teams came to us either on foot or by canoe and one racer in the team was required to stand-up paddle board through a course about 30-40 meters long. During the paddle they were required to pick up a flag from a floating buoy and bring it back to us before they could punch the CP completed.

Everyone who did it said it was challenging. Considering they had just ridden their bikes 25K and then either run or hopped in a canoe to get to us, their wobbly legs were put to the test. Many of them told us their feet cramped just trying to grip the board

It was great to see all the young kids out who were participating in the 4 hour race. These 10-12 year olds really put their parents to the test. Those who tried the stand-up paddleboard were great.

After 7 hours at our station we had about 50 teams go through, had a lot of laughs and got some great photos. Phil, the photographer, stood in the water up to his waist for the entire time anyone was on the course. He must have been out there at least 6 hours. We did take a little break during a lull in the middle of the afternoon to attempt a game of beach volley ball. We are not Olympic contenders. You will be able to see Phil’s photos on philjarvis.ca in a few days.

As usual, Bark Lake’s staff pulled together an excellent dinner for all the racers and volunteers. No, yogurt cups and bananas here, it was lasagna with salad and ice cream Sundays for desert. After dinner we gave race director Sean a hug and said good bye to all our friends to leave the racers to enjoy their evening. They all stepped outside their comfort zones today and deserved the great after party.

#100happydays Day 67 The next thing.

So are you wondering what we are up to next? This weekend we are excited to be volunteering at the Rockstar Adventure race at Bark Lake. The Rockstar is the ultimate fun adventure race. While we are disappointed that we can’t participate, volunteering is the next best thing. Stay tune for a race report on Sunday!

That's us on the home page of the Rockstar website.

Here is a little video our photographer Phil compiled of one of our visits to the Rockstar. It is the best way to spend a day on the trails, on the lake and in the forest.

#100happydays Day 51 The Rebecca Run for Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

#100happydays Day 51 The Rebecca Run for Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Today was a beautiful day, not only was the weather perfect but it was the 13th running of the Rebecca Run for Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Once again Glenis and I were there volunteering. This year we were at the finish line to cheer all the runners, walkers and rollers across.

And they are off at the Start of the 3K

In the last 13 years we have watched these little ones grow up in to typical teenagers but the sad part is there are still youngsters coming out in wheelchairs. A cure hasn’t been found yet, but they very close!

Volunteers! Here were are with Sheila, the bag check gal. The three of us have been with the Rebecca run since the first race, 13 years ago.

Everyone involved is inspired by the little ones they are running for. The volunteers, the organizers, the runners all did a great job today. The total funds raise today was just over $100,000 bring the total amount raised so far in the last 13 years to 2.6 million.

Here are a few startling facts about SMA from the Rebecca Run website:

Did you know…

  • SMA is the #1 genetic KILLER of children under the age 2.
  • SMA destroys the nerves that control voluntary movement like crawling, walking, head and neck control and even swallowing.
  • 1 in 6000 babies is born with SMA.
  • 50% of the children diagnosed before the age 2, will DIE before their 2nd birthday.
  • 1 in 40 people carry the gene – IT COULD BE YOU!

Each year Glenis and I plan our race schedule around the Rebecca Run. It’s something we can’t miss.

Another winner in the 1k. Everyone wins in that race!

Another winner in the 1k!

If you are in the area and want to help out or run in 2015, check out the Rebecca Run website. I know they would be so happy to have you come out next year.

#100happydays Day 49 Race Bag Pickup for the Rebecca Run

#100happydays Day 49 Race Bag Pickup for the Rebecca Run

I had the great opportunity to volunteer at the race bag pick up for the Rebecca Run today.

The Rebecca Run is very close to both Glenis and I. We have been involved with the event since Louise Smith had an idea of a race to raise funds to help find a cure for Spinal Muscular Atrophy 13 years ago. I remember planning with her as we trained for the Chicago Marathon. We wanted it to be the best little race around – and it is!

Louise and Cory

Race director Cory Freedman (rt) and Race Founder Louise Smith

Louise has firsthand experience with SMA, her niece was diagnosed with this disease. This diagnosed sent Louise on a mission to find a cure. Since the race started it had raised over 2.2 million dollars for Families of SMA. She has been a source of inspiration to us and to all the families dealing with SMA.

The Rebecca Run is on July 5, 2014 at Fairy Lake in Newmarket, Ontario. There is still time to register and there is always time to donate.

Rebecca Run shirts

You’ll see us in the light blue shirt volunteering at the finish line and the dark blue tech shirt on the runners. Nice shirts!

We hope we see you at the finish line.
