#happydays New Gear for the Long Run

Yesterday, we ran a great 35k.  For something a little different we decided to be driven out 35k and to run home. A point to point run rather than a loop or an out and back route. The down side of getting driven out is you get to see how far you really are running. 35k seems like long way to run when you are looking out a car window.

You have to plan ahead when you are running a long distance. Nutrition, hydration and even bathroom stops all have to be considered. There is also a mental game, getting your head around running that far for “fun” can be hard.

We pretty well have the food and drink under control, however the soreness and pain can be a real mental thing for both of us.

One thing that gets’ to me is how sore my joints are when I run long. My hips are achy during the run and for a few days after. Glenis always laughs when I exclaim 2k from the end that I just want to sit down.

Yesterday, I tried out a pair of CW-X compression shorts. Wow, I should have been listening to myself when I was pitching their benefits at Running Free! What a difference they made on how I felt during the run and how fast I recovered after. I wore a pair of Stabilyx Ventilator Shorts that are designed for joint support in the hips and core area.

For those of you who are not familiar with CW-X, all their products feature patented support webs. The support web is like kinetic taping that doesn’t come unstuck until you take the shorts off. The web design provides joint and muscle support. This support results in increased stability and balance, greater efficiency of movement, better shock resistance in your joints (I think this is what helped me), better circulation and better recovery. Oh yea and you don’t jiggle! Check out their website. cwx.com

They are definitely going to be my “go to” shorts for our next “big” adventure in September. They are surprising comfortable to wear and I didn’t look nearly as bad as I thought I would in compression shorts (according to my Blister Sister). Now, I just hope that it isn’t really cold the day of our September race or I’ll be stopping at the store to pick a pair of the tights!

#100happydays Day 92 Finding the perfect running route.

#100happydays Day 92  Finding the perfect running route.

Finding a running route is kind of important whenever you run. We find that our run will always end up short if we don’t have a plan. Before deciding on a route we discuss our goals for the run and 99% of the time we are on the same page.

Checking out a running route on the Ipad

Planning out a running route on the ipad over a morning coffee. We are all set for our long run in the morning.

We think about the scenery, hills, traffic, air quality, footing and how far we want to run while considering the weather and our goals. There is nothing like a smoggy, flat, busy, broken road to shorten our run. Trail running adds some additional considerations like the bug activity in the bush, how technical is the trail is we are considering and how much rain fall had occurred in the days before we want to run.

There are lots of great websites and apps to help you find and tweak a route. In most of them you can even save your route so that you can run it again.

Map My Run (there’s an app for that) Google Map Pedometer and Running map.com all work great. We are sure there are more out there, have a look.

#100happydays Day 87 Sticky Sticks

#100happydays Day 87  Sticky Strips

We have had an ongoing fight with flying bugs this year, in particularly the very hearty deer flies that seem to be mutating into buzzing jet fighters with teeth (as I mentioned in my post of Nature’s Little Dive Bombers ).  There are some solutions on the web that we could try, they involve wearing blue beer cups on our heads. Hummmm?

We have found another solution. It still involves wearing a hat but we found this product called Sticky Sticks. They are made to use around houseplant with aphid infestations. Well those little strips are really sticky and they work on deer flies, the upholstery in my car, and Glenis’s hair. We just used safety pin to attach the little strips to the top on our hats voilà they worked like a charm! Happy Days!

Glenis is going to love these!

Glenis is going to love these! I just don’t know how she is going to handle running with bugs stuck to her hat!

#100happydays Day 82 Cross training with a hula-hoop!

#100happydays Day 82 Cross training with a hula-hoop!

So the other day we were running through Walmart looking for bug spray when we passed a bin of hula-hoops, on sale no less.

Laughing we selected two of them. A couple of years ago we went to a Hula-hoop exercise class called Hulabics. What a hoot! Trying to get the ring to circle around us was one thing but then while ”hooping”, trying to walk & run, kick a ball, play catch and jump about. We cracked right up in the class. Apparently I do a great chicken walk while “hooping”. It was a good thing it was a small class.

It really is a lot of fun, the look on my face is just concentration to keep the hoop moving!

It looks a little silly, an adult playing with a hula-hoop but the games we played as children actually will benefit us as adults. Hula-hooping has many benefits. It is aerobic, it builds core strength, flexibility and balance, stamina and concentration oh yea, and it’s fun, all of which we all can use more of.

We spent $4.00 on our hoops, probably the cheapest piece of exercise equipment we will ever own.

#100happydays Day 68 – Family Photos

Photographer Phil was asked to take some family photos of the Mclaren clan. I went along as the assistant. We had so much fun with that group, what a nice evening with a crazy family!

Too funny, trying to get a family portrait of the Mclaren's!

#100happydays Day 59 Running the toughest ½ marathon

#100happydays Day 59 Running the toughest ½ marathon

It’s been a couple of hours since we crossed the finish line at The North Face Endurance Challenge – Ontario at Blue Mountain Ski Resort in Collingwood Ontario. Reflecting back on the race, yes it really was one of the toughest ½ marathons we have completed.

Day 59 the numbers

Can you tell we are sister? Consecutive numbers, how great is that!

The day started out early, we had to leave by 5:30am to get there for the 8am start and it was pouring rain. The only good thing about that was it wasn’t cold.

#100happydays day 59

The full moon peaking behind the clouds on the drive to the race. A break in the rain.

Blue Mountain village had been transformed into a great race expo. The North Face knows what they are doing with their Endurance Challenges. The race was organized, it was easy to find everything and the race started on time.

This was day two for the Endurance Challenge, yesterday the 50 mile, 50k and marathon races ran in the heat and humidity. Today was the ½ marathon, the 10k and the 5k in the rain.

The trails were slick, which might be too kind a word; it was like someone had poured oil on them.

This is just one of the minor ski hills we slugged up

This is just one of the minor ski hills we slugged up

The course sent us across the ski runs, and through mountain bike trails on an angle that slowly climbed up the slopes. The MTB tails were crazy slippery and at this point a little crowded, so we did a fair amount of walking or should I say slow slipping. Eventually we crossed over Scenic Caves Road into the Bruce Trail, where the rail turned a good deal more technical with the added fun of poison ivy.

The 12th side road gave us a taste of things to come, it seemed like the road perpendicular to the horizon, a very steep climb that made me wonder how people who lived on it ever got up it in the winter.

The most delightful part of the race was running through Scenic Cave’s cross country ski trails, wide, soft smooth rolling hills what were a joy to run. Then it was back on to the Bruce Trail, more rock, waterfalls, steep hills and descents and greasy trails – in general fun!

Oh yes then came the ski hills! Looking at the map of the course is deceiving. These hills were long and steep. You were either running up them or running down, with a little bit of treacherous MTB trail and slick woodwork thrown in for variety. By then the sun had come out and was beating down on us. Water was scarce and we weren’t the only runners cramping up. Luckily I was carrying Lava salts, Glenis and I downed those and we even handed out a few to a fellow runner who was having trouble.

We were so thankful to find the last aid station to full up on fluids. With only a kilometer and a half to go we were home free, or so we thought. The way home was a single track, downhill, that must have had a hundred slippery stone steps on them. It took us what seemed forever to get down those steps. The relief we felt when we hit the bottom was immense.

Then it was around the corner and out of the trees for the last 1/2k only to see our wonderful Newmarket Team Running Free friends Sandra and Jeff waiting for us. What a treat to have them run us in to the finish line after such an arduous ½. Would we do it again, yup, next year!

#100happydays Day 44 Hot summer running.

#100happydays Day 44 Hot summer running.

It had to be about 28C when we started out on our long run this morning. Beautiful. The darn deer flies were just waiting for us, but we didn’t let them get to us.

#100happydays Day 43 Hot summer run.

You can’t see them very well, but we were the first ones through the trail at 7am this morning, the the webs covered the entrance to the trail.

We had a great run then headed to Booster Juice for a recovery smoothy and then to soak our feet in the pool. Nice.

Ah - A soak in the pool after the run.

It feels so good to plunge our feet into cold water after our hot run.
