#100happydays Day 58 Home Again!

#100happydays Day 58 Home Again!

Wow the week went really fast. Glenis had quite the week with her migraine and dealing with work. I know she will feel better by tomorrow, and I’m back!

I had such a great time camping with my hubby. Algonquin Park has to be my favorite place to camp. Not that I have had much experience, we have only really been camping for a couple of years, and when you think about it, what works out to 5 or 6 times.

This was the longest we have lived out of a tent. Other than the rain that hung on for the first 2 and a half days, the weather was pretty good. The best part was our tent didn’t leak; we had experience with that last year.

#100happydays Day 58

Back home, our little car not quite as filled as when we set out. You can see out the windows!

I have a lot of great pictures and stories to share in the next week but now Glenis and I have to concentrate on running a half marathon up and down Blue Mountain’s ski hills tomorrow. Apparently it is calling for rain too, so it just might be nasty! It’s early to bed for the sisters!

#100happydays Day 52 Planning our next race – The North Face Endurance Challenge

#100happydays Day 52 Planning our next race  – The North Face Endurance Challenge

We are making plans for our next ½ marathon. The North Face Endurance Challenge is next Saturday and Sunday at Blue Mountain. This two day event features an 80k, full marathon and marathon relay on Saturday and a ½ marathon, 10k, 5k and kids race on Sunday.

We are planning on running the ½ marathon. It should be fun. After reviewing the course it looks like we run up the mountain on single track trails, do a little road running and then back on the trails along the top of the ski hills winding back down the hill to the finish. There is a 1700 foot difference in elevation so it should be a lung burner and a lot of fun. A lot of the course will be familiar to us because is includes areas we ran through on the Snowshoe raid last year.

After the race,  The North Face is hosting the Ontario finish line festival in Blue Mountain village with includes a meet and greet with Dean Karnazes. The North Face Global Athlete Team Member, Dean Karnazes, the ultramarathon man, will be answering questions, taking photos and signing autographs. Although Glenis and I will never be in his league, it’s always nice to rub shoulders with the elite!

#100happydays Day 51 The Rebecca Run for Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

#100happydays Day 51 The Rebecca Run for Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Today was a beautiful day, not only was the weather perfect but it was the 13th running of the Rebecca Run for Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Once again Glenis and I were there volunteering. This year we were at the finish line to cheer all the runners, walkers and rollers across.

And they are off at the Start of the 3K

And they are off at the Start of the 3K

In the last 13 years we have watched these little ones grow up in to typical teenagers but the sad part is there are still youngsters coming out in wheelchairs. A cure hasn’t been found yet, but they very close!

Volunteers! Here were are with Sheila, the bag check gal. The three of us have been with the Rebecca run since the first race, 13 years ago.

Everyone involved is inspired by the little ones they are running for. The volunteers, the organizers, the runners all did a great job today. The total funds raise today was just over $100,000 bring the total amount raised so far in the last 13 years to 2.6 million.

Here are a few startling facts about SMA from the Rebecca Run website:

Did you know…

  • SMA is the #1 genetic KILLER of children under the age 2.
  • SMA destroys the nerves that control voluntary movement like crawling, walking, head and neck control and even swallowing.
  • 1 in 6000 babies is born with SMA.
  • 50% of the children diagnosed before the age 2, will DIE before their 2nd birthday.
  • 1 in 40 people carry the gene – IT COULD BE YOU!

Each year Glenis and I plan our race schedule around the Rebecca Run. It’s something we can’t miss.

Another winner in the 1k. Everyone wins in that race!

Another winner in the 1k!

If you are in the area and want to help out or run in 2015, check out the Rebecca Run website. I know they would be so happy to have you come out next year.

#100happydays Day 49 Race Bag Pickup for the Rebecca Run

#100happydays Day 49 Race Bag Pickup for the Rebecca Run

I had the great opportunity to volunteer at the race bag pick up for the Rebecca Run today.

The Rebecca Run is very close to both Glenis and I. We have been involved with the event since Louise Smith had an idea of a race to raise funds to help find a cure for Spinal Muscular Atrophy 13 years ago. I remember planning with her as we trained for the Chicago Marathon. We wanted it to be the best little race around – and it is!

Louise and Cory

Race director Cory Freedman (rt) and Race Founder Louise Smith

Louise has firsthand experience with SMA, her niece was diagnosed with this disease. This diagnosed sent Louise on a mission to find a cure. Since the race started it had raised over 2.2 million dollars for Families of SMA. She has been a source of inspiration to us and to all the families dealing with SMA.

The Rebecca Run is on July 5, 2014 at Fairy Lake in Newmarket, Ontario. There is still time to register and there is always time to donate.

Rebecca Run shirts

You’ll see us in the light blue shirt volunteering at the finish line and the dark blue tech shirt on the runners. Nice shirts!

We hope we see you at the finish line.

#100happydays Day 46 Tomorrow’s Canada Day!

#100happydays Day 46 Tomorrow’s Canada Day!

Glenis has a beautiful Canadian flag flying in front of her house this week because tomorrow is Canada Day, the day we celebrate the tremendous privilege it is to live in Canada and the opportunities it brings to us.

The Canadian Flag a symbol of Canada that is recognized all over the world. A lot of Canadians don’t know how the Canadian flag came to be the brilliant red and white with the maple leaf. It was chosen from 100’s designs submitted to a parliamentary committee that was tasked with selecting our new flag.  It took them years to narrow the selection down to 3, a Red Ensign with the fleur-de-lis and the Union Jack, a design incorporating three red maple leaves, and a red flag with a single, stylized red maple leaf on a white square.

“The flag is the symbol of the nation’s unity, for it, beyond any doubt, represents all the citizens of Canada without distinction of race, language, belief or opinion.” Honourable Maurice Bourget, Speaker of the Senate Feb. 15, 1965

#100happydays Day 46 - Our Canadian Flag

Glenis’s beautiful Canadian Flag

The National Flag of Canada was approved by Parliament in 1964 and proclaimed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to take effect on February 15, 1965. It is a red flag, twice as long as it is wide, containing in its centre a white square bearing a red maple leaf. Red and white are Canada’s official colours and, with the maple leaf, are the symbolic elements found in the Canadian flag.http://www.pch.gc.ca

There is a lot more information about our flag on our government website, like the rules on how to respectfully fly a flag, and why we ended up with the 11 pointed maple leaf on the flag.

Happy Canada Day from the Blister Sisters!

#100happydays Day 44 Hot summer running.

#100happydays Day 44 Hot summer running.

It had to be about 28C when we started out on our long run this morning. Beautiful. The darn deer flies were just waiting for us, but we didn’t let them get to us.

#100happydays Day 43 Hot summer run.

You can’t see them very well, but we were the first ones through the trail at 7am this morning, the the webs covered the entrance to the trail.

We had a great run then headed to Booster Juice for a recovery smoothy and then to soak our feet in the pool. Nice.

Ah - A soak in the pool after the run.

It feels so good to plunge our feet into cold water after our hot run.

#100happydays Day 41 The Rockstar is coming!

#100happydays Day 41 The Rockstar is coming!

The Rockstar Adventure race is our all time favorite race, and it’s only a month away. If we can’t run it (injury is the only reason we would miss being a participant) we volunteer at it. This year injury is getting in the way again so we’ll be out on the course cheering people on, helping Sean by making our CP run smoothly and hopefully the runners will have a great time too. Everyone who is planning to do the stand up paddle board CP should look for us.

#100happydays Day 41 Rockstar Adventure Race

#100happydays Day 41 Rockstar Adventure Race

The Rockstar is an unique points-based adventure race with a “choose-your-own adventure“ format designed for racers of all levels.the Route is unmarked once you are off your bike, so you can spend 4 hours or 8 hours navigating around the bush or paddling in Bark Lake. Once you are done they have a great after party.

If you have ever wanted to try an adventure race or if you are pretty good at them, this is the one to do. As of today they still have room for extra teams. Click on one of the links in this post to find out more.

#100happydays Day 40 Take a book; Return a book

#100happydays Day 40 Take a book; Return a book

This morning’s run started off in a warm drizzle. We decided to do one of our usual routes backwards. We always chuckle to ourselves how running a trail backwards looks like a whole new trail; it can be much the same for a road run. The route takes us by some pretty homes along the river on a quite road that eventually runs out of sidewalk. Near the end of the road we were looking around at the damage a recent storm inflected on some of the properties when we spied a little “house” on a fence post sitting at the end of a drive way. In all our times running by this spot we had never noticed this little house. It was obvious that it had been there a while so we just had to investigate.

Wow, it was a Little Free Library, take a book; return a book! We didn’t even know there was one in our town, how cool is that!

#100happydays Day 40 A Hidden Library

Having a peek inside this cute little library full of books!

I found out a little more about the little free library at littlefreelibrary.org. What a great concept. You can find these cute little book houses throughout the US and Canada. I can’t believe we haven’t seen one before! Check it out, you might find one in your neighborhood!
