#100happydays Day 28 Turtle Eggs

#100happydays Day 28 Turtle Eggs

This morning’s run was kind of special; we came across a large snapping turtle laying her eggs. Now that’s not something you see every day!

#100happdays Day 28 Glenis and mom turtle. Check out the concern on Glen’s face! You always worry about a mom giving “birth”

Here is a little information on the snapping turtle from the Nature Ontario website.

In Ontario, females do not begin to breed until they are 17 to 19 years old. They dig a nest in late May or June in an open area, usually one with loose, sandy soil. The nest site is often the side of a road, an embankment or a shoreline, but the females will use almost any area they can excavate. A single clutch usually consists of between 40 and 50 eggs, which hatch in the fall. Hatchlings are two to three centimeters in length. The incubation temperature of the eggs determines the gender of the hatchlings.

Approximately 90 percent of their diet consists of dead animal and plant matter, and this species plays an important role in keeping lakes and wetlands clean. Adult snapping turtles have few natural enemies, but both hibernating and young adults are occasionally victims of opportunistic predation by otters and mink. Raccoons, foxes, skunks and opossums often eat snapping turtle eggs.

Unlike most other Ontario turtles, the snapping turtle has a very small plastron and cannot withdraw into its shell for protection when threatened. Therefore, on land this turtle’s only defense from predators is to snap repeatedly and scare them away. In water the snapping turtle rarely snaps at people or other potential threats and will simply swim away if threatened.

I found it hard to believe it is actually legal to hunt these animals even though their populations are in decline. We hope these little eggs survive.

#100happydays Day 23 A little yoga in the morning. We ran the trails this morning and stopped in the beautiful morning sun for a little yoga stretching. Then it was off to a fun Satuday at the Mclaren Open! Thanks for the photo, Phil. See more of his photos here.

#100happydays Day 20 – Tennis?

#100happydays Day 20 – Tennis? There is a tennis court in the park we run by that is always empty at 6:30 in the morning.  It’s a perfect time to go, no one is there! I guess people just aren’t in to tennis that early.

We kind of thought we were!

We had a hoot playing, or trying to play this morning. Glenis dug out some rackets and balls and there we were ready to be the next Venus and Serena Williams (sisters of course) – minus the skills and youth. We did a lot of sprinting, panting and laughing.  Great cross training. Happy day.

Always the girl! Always happy!

#100happydays Day 11 The early morning trail run.  When ever we get the chance we head to the trails for our run, even if it’s 6am. This morning was beautiful, just warming up and no bugs.

Giant’s Rib Raid

What a perfect day for a tromp through the woods with friends. The sun shone, and apparently the wind blew, although we didn’t really feel it sheltered in the trees. Spring flowers were blooming and the orienteering began.

The Blister Sisters and the Bandage

Our team of 3 for the race

The Giant’s Rib Raid is put on by Don’t Get Lost and is a 22-26 Km orienteering trail race on the Niagara Escarpment. This year’s race started near Kilbride Ontario. It involves a lot of technical running and a compass so you “don’t get lost!” We love running the Bruce Trail. The race started at Kelso Conservation Area and proceeded through Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area, Crawford Lake Conservation Area and wound its way down to Kilbride. Of course we didn’t know any of this until we picked up our maps the day of the race.

Here we are meeting another team in the race at a CP.

Here we are meeting another team in the race at a CP.

We had to add to our team name include our 3rd teammate (the rules call for teams of three) so the Blister Sisters and the Bandage took off running.

We did great on the first 6 CP’s (check points) but CP 7 gave us a run for the money, we were so close, but we just couldn’t find it. After deciding that we really need to do a navigation course and learn how to use our trusty compass with a map, we bushwhacked on to CP 8 & 9 only to find out that CP 7 was also CP 10. Well, we found CP 10, no problem!

Brook's Cascadia Shoes

Brook’s Cascadia! Love them!

More bushwhacking ensued to try to stomp our way out of the bush. The ice storm of the fall of 2013 did a lot of damage to the bush and I don’t think I found 2 square meters that didn’t have a downed tree or a cord of branches on it.

Deep Dark CP

Check points were everywhere. Too much fun!

Time was running short so we ran the trails through Crawford Lake, until we saw the beautiful carvings that are near the lake. Picture taking took a few minutes off our time. The next part of the trail was particularly rocky and beautiful, by then we were really behind so our non-competitive spirit took advantage of us and we chose to just enjoy the rest of the race.

Next year we’ll be back and perhaps have a handle on the whole compass thing.

Awesome trail running and climbing!
